Giving Back with Katie’s Crusaders | AJCreative

About two months ago, I responded to a request for handmade items and donations for a silent auction in the Des Moines area. To be honest, I did not know much about Katie’s Crusaders.

After reading more about Katie’s Crusaders, I found out that women can be nominated to be sponsored and their families will be given a portion of the  proceeds that are raised by the organization. It’s a financial and emotional support system like no other.

“It is our mission to provide ongoing help and hope to local Iowa families who are dealing with breast cancer,” is such a strong mission statement from Katie Mangan. Katie is a four-year breast cancer survivor and the founder of Katie’s Crusaders. Let’s just say that after reading story after story about overcoming breast cancer and seeing the relationships that have been created and made stronger through this organization, I couldn’t be more proud to donate.

Although I have not yet been directly affected by breast cancer, I have been affected by other forms of cancer that have taken the lives of loved ones. My grandfather passed away from colon cancer before I was born. One day I will meet him. My father overcame skin cancer this past May and from his journey, I’ve launched a new business, Emberglow, to promote healthy, sunless tanning. More on this to come!

Katie’s Crusaders will be holding a walk/run and silent auction on October 12, 2013 at Centennial Park in Waukee. If you’re in the area, I challenge you to sign up for the run, volunteer your time for the event or bid on some amazing donated items.

Pink is a color near and dear to those affected with breast cancer. In the way I know how to give back best, I went to work on designing a few stationery note card sets. Soft pink florals and fun nautical-themed custom designs were printed on white cover stock, packaged with white envelopes and wrapped with a grommet tag and bakers twine.

Designing custom stationery may not seem that special to some, but it’s my dream that lives are touched through this event and that there are men and women that will write a note of encouragement, a note of thanks or just a short note saying hello and that their may be uplifted through my stationery.

Barber Shop Vintage Treasures | AJCreative

It’s the thrill of finding a gem!

When I was a little girl I traveled to garage sales and antique shops with my parents. It all seemed a bit boring back then, but somehow that passion for a good hunt has worn off of me.

A few months back while searching Craigslist, which I often do, and much-too often according to my husband, I came across a post for a local barber shop that was closing. The owner was retiring after 40 years. Only a few photos were posted, but those included a vintage magazine rack and chrome coat rack. I wanted, no, I needed those!

I made the short drive to Des Moines the next morning and arrived about 9 am. The owner, an older gentleman, opened his doors at 8 am and already saw a few items out the door. I greeted the man as he put out his cigarette and laid down the daily newspaper. It was like I had just taken a trip to yesteryear. I asked him how long he had been in business and what his retirement plans included. Forty years in the same location and fishing were his answers. He told me anything I find is up for sale.

After wandering around, I claimed the chrome coat rack and he told me the magazine rack was sold immediately that morning. Bummer. Another couple walked in as I was collecting the items I wanted to purchase. They were local pickers and wanted my coat rack. Score. I knew it was a find! Sorry, early bird gets the worm.

I picked up the coat rack, a vintage Frito Lay chip clip display and a small metal stool. I was so excited that I didn’t even negotiate on price. I picked up that heavy beast, loaded it up and was on my way.

Do you know how awkward and dangerous it is to drive home with a 6 ft. tall coat rack rolling back and forth in your car? Well, I safely made it home. After a quick washing in the garage, I moved the coat rack into the kitchen for a deep cleaning. Thankfully my husband wasn’t around to see my newest find. It was in bad shape! It’s best to show him my newest purchased after they are in tip-top shape. That’s one thing I’ve learned after six years of marriage.

After researching how to gently clean chrome, I began with straight vinegar. I then tried baking soda. This grime wouldn’t budge! I shouldn’t have been surprised. It was 40 years of nicotine, dirt and oils from all the hats that once hung there. Finally, the combo of vinegar and baking soda, an old rag and Magic Eraser began to wipe away years of smoke and dirt. I knew I could find some shiny chrome under there. The chrome pole had some oxidation or spots that resembled rust. I took some aluminum foil and rubbed over those to reveal the shine.

I discovered ‘Fixtures Manufacturing Corp. Kansas City, MO’ stamped on the steel base. After some googling, I found out that these coat and hat racks were commonly used in barber shops. Mine may even date back to the 1930s or 1940s. Although I haven’t found complete history on my piece, I have found comparable designs online.

I had been searching for a chrome coat rack for months, maybe even longer, and even considered buying a new one from IKEA for about $50. I’m so glad I didn’t. I love my vintage find, a true piece of Des Moines history and can’t wait to share my next treasure.

Black Foiled Monogram Business Cards | AJCreative

Modern, simplistic and classy. Rebecca came to me looking for a business card design that would represent her months and years from now. There’s nothing more classy and timeless than a bold monogram design.

Rebecca found inspiration for her cards from scripted names, bold initial logos, gilded edges and foiling printing techniques. I created a custom business card design with just her monogram on the front and her name with contact information on the reverse.

Printed on a thick, black uncoated cover stock, these cards are printed with a glossy silver foiling on both sides. The glossy foil gives the cards texture and they are truly eye-catching.

Andrea + Matt | Modern Elegance Wedding | AJCreative

As a designer, one of my favorite parts of being in the bridal industry is getting the chance to sit down and listen to each couple’s vision for their day. When months, or years of planning come to fruition in just a few short hours, the details really count!

I had the opportunity to work with both Andrea and Matt a few years ago for a publishing company in the Des Moines area. Little did I know that one day I would be a part of planning their wedding celebration.

The custom wedding stationery designs I created for Andrea and Matt included an elegant script typeface and solid black printing. Each piece was printed on a thick pearlescent cover stock. It was a perfect touch of shimmer for this elegant event! Programs, direction cards, menu cards, place cards and a thank you sign were designed and coordinated with the couple’s personal style.

‘Modern Elegance’ is how I would describe the style and overall design for Andrea and Matt’s day. The two tied the knot at a ceremony at Lutheran Church of Hope and partied under glowing lanterns at Glen Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines.

Glen Oaks is not only a gorgeous venue by day, but a beautiful scene at night. The ballroom included large round tables with crisp, white linens.

Tables were decorated with beautiful white flowers, silky pewter table runners, white-striped napkins, simple candle votives and mirrored glass. Menu cards, backed with black cover stock were tucked inside of the napkins and each place setting included a place card.

Megan + Danial | Custom Hand-Drawn Floral Wedding Invitations

This celebration will be full of big, colorful Gerbera daisies, glowing candles and a beautiful bride in a tulle ball gown. Megan and Danial’s vision is an outdoor garden theme, fun and flirty with a touch of class. They are tying the knot this July at Megan’s family farm. This fun couple will be celebrating with their reception at the county fairgrounds where Megan spent her summers while growing up. Their dark purple and colorful floral scheme will be dazzling with accented candles and lights.

Inspired by gardens full of gorgeous flowers, I created this custom floral invitation set with modern typography and hand-drawn florals. This invitation card included the couple’s wedding website for directing their guests to accommodations and directions. A coordinating RSVP postcard completed this invitation suite beautifully.

The designs are printed on thick white uncoated cover stock and are mailed in pewter gray mailing envelopes.

Bold Typography Save the Dates | AJCreative

A few months ago, I chose my winner for complimentary custom save the date cards. Casey, the lucky bride-to-be, is getting married to Cory in November. They were looking for a ‘vintage, modern and artsy’ style. A few inspiration images included kraft envelopes with hand-stamped addresses, vintage hankies and hand-lettered designs. Casey also said they enjoy ‘natural and earthy’ looks.

After receiving a couple engagement photos from them, I fell in love with this photo. How can you not love… love? I wouldn’t be in this business if I didn’t! The photo was perfect and I had to use this in the design. Kudos to the photographer in the family that snapped these pics.

A bright blue envelopes adds a fun pop of color and is a true eye-catcher in the mailbox.

Black Hot Lace Wedding Trend | AJCreative

Timeless elegance. One of my favorite trends in weddings this year is lace. Not only white lace, but black lace details. Delicate eyelash lace, Chantilly lace, bold lace styles and vintage lace can all be found in this year’s weddings.

I’m currently working on lace-inspired invitations and will be showing those to you all soon, but I’ve been inspired by the design of lace and want to share some inspiration with four of my top trending picks.

1. Lace Votive Candles
